About The Robbers Tree
At the southern end of Stockyard Street is the remains of a solitary tree on a sand dune where the bank robber Joseph Wells hid after making an armed withdrawal from the local bank in 1880. Unfortunately the tree was struck by lightning in 2021 and damaged beyond repair. Plans are currently underway for a permanent memorial on the site, however the story and history of the Robbers Tree is still on display at the site of the remaining stump on Stockyard Street.
