About The Big Melon
Be ready to stop and take a photo of this giant bright pink watermelon slice on your way in to Chinchilla. Weighing four tonnes, standing three-metres high and nine-metres wide, this iconic slice of watermelon holds pride of place on the Warrego Highway, situated between the Chinchilla Visitor Information Centre and the railway crossing. Located near the Visitor Information Centre and the Botanical Parkland this is the perfect place to pull in and get some information on the area after getting your 'selfie' in front of the Melon. Chinchilla is well known for the Chinchilla Watermelon Festival, which is held bi-annually and this great icon is perfect for Chinchilla. A national online travel company competition to build a new 'Big Thing', saw Chinchilla's bid for a Big Melon slice beat three other finalists for an oversized tourist attraction.
