About Radio Picture Theatre

The Radio Picture Theatre, a classic Art Nouveau movie theatre, first opened its doors on Saturday, 10 April 1926. Originally a family-owned and operated business, it continued under private ownership until 1995 when the Barcaldine Branch of the Arts Council took over its management. The building still features its original canvas seats and a painted proscenium around the screen, preserving its historic charm. Today, the theatre is run by dedicated volunteers from the Arts Council and operates on most weekends, showing the latest movies. Regular screenings are held most Friday and Sunday nights from the end of January to mid-December, with occasional Saturday morning showings at 10:00 am, depending on the schedule and movie selection. This unique venue offers a nostalgic experience for movie-goers, combining its historic setting with modern film entertainment.
