About Lake Moondarra

Lake Moondarra, located just 17 kilometers north of Mount Isa’s city center, is a picturesque and popular destination for both locals and tourists. Accessible via a sealed road, visitors are treated to a scenic drive along the lake's shoreline. Known for its stunning Outback views, the lake offers a variety of recreational activities, including swimming, boating, sailing, and canoeing, all in its safe, still waters. Anglers can enjoy fishing at Lake Moondarra, which has been stocked with barramundi to provide excellent fishing opportunities; no permits are required, but catch limits do apply. The lake is surrounded by scenic picnic areas shaded by large trees, making it one of the best spots in Mount Isa for barbecues. These barbecues are free to use and are stocked with firewood regularly. Lake Moondarra also attracts a diverse range of birdlife, including pelicans, cormorants, galahs, and ducks, offering fantastic opportunities for photography and birdwatching. Bird enthusiasts can get a species list from Outback at Isa. Lake Moondarra also serves as a vital water source for Mount Isa and the adjacent Mount Isa Mines (MIM). Pets are not permitted, and camping is only allowed during the annual Lake Moondarra Fishing Classic in October.
